Who joins the AAG?
The AAG is for algebraists and those whose research interests coincide with the discipline. We interpret algebra quite broadly, including areas such as topological algebra, algebraic logic, graph theory and coding theory.
About the AAG
The main aim of the AAG is to foster communication between algebraists in Australia and to run the annual Australian Algebra Conference. The conference has a proud tradition of encouraging talks by students and typically about one third of the talks are presented by students. The conference also aims to provide graduate students in algebra with the opportunity to give their first public presentation in a relaxed and supportive environment. At each conference, the most outstanding student talk is awarded the Gordon Preston Prize Australian Algebra Group – Gordon Preston Prize (ltumathstats.com).
History of the AAG
The Australian Algebra Conference was initially called the Algebra Conference of Victoria. The first conference was held in 1983 (with a prequel in 1982). Up to 2017, the AAG was known as the Victorian Algebra Group (VAG). The VAG became a Special Interest Group in 1988 and the name of the annual conference became the Victorian Algebra Conference in 1992. In 2017, the group took on a more national flavour: its name changed to the Australian Algebra Group and the annual conference became the Australian Algebra Conference. See the AAG website for further history and information.
