The Australian Mathematical Society Medal

The Australian Mathematical Society Medal

Who is the medal awarded to?

The Australian Mathematical Society Medal is awarded to a member of the Society for distinguished research in the Mathematical Sciences.

Information

Each year, the Medal is presented at the opening session of the AustMS Annual Meeting. The award was first presented in 1981, and many distinguished mathematicians have received this award or been nominated for it since then. Nominations are called for each year in the March Gazette, and nominations close in late May each year.

Eligibility criteria

The medal will be awarded annually to a member who has been conferred a PhD or equivalent:

  • no more than 15 years before 31st December of the year in which the Medal is awarded, or
  • with allowable periods of career interruption that would be commensurate with part 2(i)(a) of the rules.

Through to 2023, nominees that are no more than 40 years of age as of 31st December of the year in which the Medal is awarded will also be accepted, and the Medal Committee may waive this age limit by up to five years in cases where there have been significant interruptions to a mathematical career.

A significant proportion of the research work should have been carried out in Australia.

To be eligible, a nominee for the Medal must have been a member of the Society for the calendar year preceding the year of the award. Back dating of membership to the previous year is not acceptable.

How to apply

Nominations for the Australian Mathematical Society Medal should include:

  1. A nomination form to be completed by the nominee.
    1. an extended citation, not more than two pages in length, arguing the case for awarding the Medal to the nominee.a full list of publications of the candidate, with the most significant marked by an asterisk.a curriculum vitae of the candidate’s professional career, highlighting any achievements that add support to the nomination.
    1. the names of three suitable referees, along with a brief statement as to their appropriateness.

All data, including the nomination form, is to be submitted by the nominator via the AMPA nominations website.
