The Mathematical Sciences Institute is seeking to appoint up to two PhD candidates in geometric analysis.
The candidates will be supported by scholarships funded through an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery project awarded to Ben Andrews, Mat Langford and James McCoy and a Future Fellowship awarded to Mat Langford. The successful candidates will undertake research related to these projects.
The ARC grants provide for some funding for domestic and international travel for successful applicants to attend conferences and workshops.

Join Monash University’s School of Mathematics as a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Discrete Mathematics (Level B or C) and contribute to world-class teaching and research in one of Australia’s leading mathematics schools.

In this role, you will work closely with colleagues across the School of Mathematics to advance research in discrete mathematics, deliver outstanding teaching, and support the development of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Research areas of interest include combinatorics, graph theory, design theory, and algebra with a combinatorial flavour.

This is an exciting opportunity for two teaching-focused Lecturers to grow their teaching impact through leadership in embedding a technical background of generative AI and machine learning into Science and Mathematics programs at UQ.

As teaching-focused Lecturers, the appointees will also be expected to:
Teach and coordinate courses;
Engage in research and/or other appropriate activities, for example in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning or a discipline appropriate to their background;
Supervise research projects for both undergraduate and postgraduate students;
Perform administrative and other activities associated with the School, Faculty and wider university.
In the longer term, the appointee will expand their teaching activities, help determine the long-term strategic direction of mathematics and statistics education at UQ, and develop a broader leadership role in the scholarship of teaching and learning. They will innovate and contribute to the continued development and improvement of a variety of teaching programs across the School, Faculty and wider university.

A Lecturer (Level B) academic will undertake independent teaching and research in their discipline or related area. In research and/or scholarship and/or teaching, a Level B academic will make an independent contribution through professional practice and expertise and coordinate and/or lead the activities of other staff, as appropriate to the discipline. A Level B academic will normally contribute to teaching at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate level, engage in independent scholarship and/or research and/or professional activities appropriate to their profession or discipline. They will normally undertake administration primarily relating to their activities at the institution and may be required to perform the full academic responsibilities of and related administration for the coordination of an award program of the institution

A Senior Lecturer (Level C) academic will make a significant contribution to the discipline at the national level. In research and/or scholarship and/or teaching they will make original contributions, which expand knowledge or practice in their discipline. A Level C academic will normally make a significant contribution to research and/or scholarship and/or teaching and administration activities of an organisational unit or an interdisciplinary area at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate level. They will normally play a major role or provide a significant degree of leadership in scholarly, research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession, discipline and/or community and may be required to perform the full academic responsibilities of and related administration for the coordination of a large award program or a number of smaller award programs of the institution.

The Lecturer – EF (level B) carries out teaching and other scholarly activities associated with mathematics and statistics education in the School. The School’s undergraduate and postgraduate programs cover a wide spectrum of courses in Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, and Statistics mirroring the School’s strong research programs. It has particular strengths in Algebra, Analysis, Combinatorics, Geometry, Mathematical Physics and Number Theory, Bayesian and Monte Carlo Methods, Mathematical Modelling and Biomathematics, Quantum Mathematics, Biostatistics and Ecology, Computational Mathematics, Data Science, Dynamical Systems and Integrability, Finance and Risk Analysis, Nonparametric Statistics, Fluid Dynamics and Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Optimisation, Stochastic Analysis, Stochastic Modelling, and Fractional Calculus.

Working closely with Curtin researchers and collaborators from the Department of Defence, you will use advanced statistical techniques to assess system performance, capability and reliability, delivering insights that inform research outcomes and operational decision-making.

In this role you will also conduct cutting-edge research in computational and applied mathematics, including but not limited to optimisation, scientific machine learning and AI for science, numerical mathematics, inverse problems and scientific computing. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in the design, analysis, and/or application of mathematical and computational methods for scientific and engineering problems arising in areas such as climate science, physics, and the life sciences.
