The Dr Mandawuy Yunupingu lecture is dedicated to celebrating Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in mathematics. Each year the Yunupingu lecturer(s) are chosen by the Conference Program Advisory Board (CPAB) based on nominations by the AustMS membership and ratified by the Society’s EDI Committee, with the aim of increasing the visible representation of under-represented groups in mathematics. The subject of the lecture may be mathematical research, issues surrounding equity and diversity in mathematics, or both.

Historical notes
  • The inaugural Dr Yunupingu lecture was delivered at the 2020 AustMS meeting. There was a special introduction to mark the occasion by Dr Chris Matthews (who unfortunately could not deliver it personally on the day) and a wonderful Dr Yunupingu lecture was delivered by Professor Rowena Ball. A special session on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion organized by Professor Aidan Sims and Associate Professor Amie Albrecht was also held.
  • In 2022 the lecture was delivered jointly by Associate Professor Michael Donovan and Dr Judy-Anne Osborn.
  • In 2024 the lecture was delivered jointly by Dr Rachael Ka’ai-Mahuta and Mr Michael Miller at the joint meeting of the NZMS, AMS and AustMS.
  • In 2025 the chosen lecturer Dr Jared Field could not attend on the day.
