Matrix Research Program: Applications of Topological Data Analysis to Mathematical Biology

This one-week intensive research program aims to bring together experts in algebraic topology, topological data analysis and mathematical biology with an aim to build bridges and collaboration between these research groups. Key speakers and other participants will come from diverse research backgrounds from pure mathematics to bioinformatics. There is extensive evidence that partnerships between these seemingly disparate research areas can yield spectacular results, increasing the impact of mathematical research.

Example applications of TDA in the research of the key speakers include the improved diagnosis, analysis, and predictions of tumour growth (Harrington) and discovering biophysical signatures of protein dynamics (Crawford). Biological applications have also motivated the of new mathematical theory. This research program includes a mix of international and domestic researchers, while focusing on the development of this research area in the Australian research community. As such, this research program is designed to include both introductory and advanced research talks, collaboration time and a healthy mixture of senior and early-career researchers.
