Women in scientific organizations: global evidence from science academies and unions

The SCGES Webinar Series is a regular event coordinated by the Standing Committee for Gender Equality in Science (SCGES). On International Day of Women and Girls in Science, ISC, IAP and SCGES invite the global science community to the presentation of the findings of their landmark project examining gender equality across academies, unions, and disciplinary societies worldwide. The study provides the clearest picture to date of how women participate, lead, and are recognized within scientific organizations — and where barriers remain. The report brings together institutional data from 136 organizations with reflections from nearly 650 scientists and targeted interviews, offering an unprecedented view of both the structures and lived experiences that shape access, leadership, and inclusion in scientific organizations. This webinar will present the main findings, highlight examples of effective practices, and open a discussion on the structural changes needed to make scientific institutions more equitable and representative. The event will be held online on February 11th, 2026, 2-4 PM UTC (3-5 PM CET).

Opportunities

Sydney Mathematical Research Institute (SMRI) International Visitor Program (IVP): applications closing 11:59pm (Sydney time) Tuesday 17th February, 2026.

The 2026 February Round applications are now open. Researchers in the mathematical sciences from international universities who wish to do research at SMRI either individually or as part of a group of collaborators are warmly invited to apply.

This round is for visits taking place between January – December 2027 for general applicants; and September 2026 – December 2027 for Aus & NZ citizens working overseas.

Applications will close on Tuesday 17th February 2026 (11:59 pm AEST).
(NB: The next application period will be open between June – August 2026) Applications (with the information requested in the terms and conditions) must be made through the webform found on the IVP webpage.

WIMSIG committee election

The election for WIMSIG committee members closed on 31st Dec 2025.

The positions of Incoming Chair and Secretary had only one nomination each, so no election was needed. The position of Student Representative had two nominations.

Katharine Turner (Incoming Chair), Serena Dipierro (Secretary), and Naomi Reed (Student Representative) are declared elected.

WIMSIG Awards

Applications/nominations are now open for the following:

WIMSIG Cheryl E. Praeger Travel Awards awarded to provide support for female mathematicians to attend conferences or to visit collaborators.
There are two rounds of the Travel Awards per year.
Due date for nominations: April 10th 2026 and October 10th 2026
WIMSIG Anne Penfold Street Awards awarded to provide financial support to mathematicians for their caring responsibilities, while they travel for conferences or research visits to collaborators.
Note: this award is open to mathematicians of all genders and mathematical sciences conference organisers.
There are two rounds of the Travel Awards per year.
Due date for nominations: April 10th 2026 and October 10th 2026
AMSI AustMS WIMSIG Maryam Mirzakhani Award supports international female students pursuing a postgraduate degree in mathematics in Australia and other initiatives that support gender diversity in mathematics. There is one round of the Maryam Mirzakhani Award per year.
Due date for nominations: April 10th 2026
Funding for 2026 Women in Mathematics Day (May 12)
WIMSIG is calling for applications for funding to support Women in Mathematics Day events in 2026. The applications should contain a description of the event and a proposed budget. Priority may be given to joint proposals by multiple institutions.
Applications should be sent to the WIMSIG Treasurer, Laleh Tafakori by March 18th 2026.

ANZIAM prizes and medals

The ANZIAM 2026 conference took place in Canberra in February.

Prof Mary Myerscough (University of Sydney) was awarded the ANZIAM medal and Prof Ngamta (Natalie) Thamwattana (University of Newcastle) received the EO Tuck Medal. A/Prof Roslyn Hickson (CSIRO/James Cook University) received the KA Landman Medal. Dr Elizabeth Harris (University of Newcastle) received one of three Outstanding PhD Thesis Awards.

International Women’s Day, 8 March

International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated annually on 8 March, commemorating women’s fight for equality and liberation.

World Meeting for Women in Mathematics

On behalf of the CWM (Committee for Women In Mathematics), we would like to encourage people to attend the 3rd world meeting for Women in Mathematics.

The World Meeting for Women in Mathematics (WM)² is scheduled to take place on July 22nd, 2026, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, USA, as a satellite event the day before the ICM 2026. The (WM)² is held every four years in conjunction with the ICM and is dedicated to building a thriving worldwide community of women mathematicians. This third edition promises mathematical excellence, community building, and meaningful dialogue on advancing the participation and visibility of women in mathematics worldwide. The scientific program will feature four invited research talks by:

Kirsten Eisentrager (Penn State University, USA)
Luz de Teresa (UNAM, Mexico)
Chelsea Walton (Rice University, USA)
Melanie Weber (Harvard University, USA)

The event will include a poster session, and discussions on key issues facing women in mathematics.

If you are registering for the ICM at the same time, you will find the option to register for (WM)² under the tab “Additional Information” > “Sessions.”

Donations to support the Maryam Mirzakhani Award

The AMSI/AustMS WIMSIG Maryam Mirzakhani Award supports international female students pursuing a postgraduate degree in mathematics in Australia and other initiatives that support gender diversity in mathematics.

Maryam Mirzakhani (1977–2017) was an Iranian mathematician and a professor at Stanford University. In 2014 she became the first female recipient of the prestigious Fields Medal. She passed away much too soon, but her achievements live on and continue to inspire many. The Award has been established to honour her work as well as her role in breaking the glass ceiling for women in mathematics.

The AMSI/AustMS WIMSIG Maryam Mirzakhani Award supports international female students pursuing a postgraduate degree in mathematics in Australia and other initiatives that support gender diversity in mathematics.

Maryam Mirzakhani (1977–2017) was an Iranian mathematician and a professor at Stanford University. In 2014 she became the first female recipient of the prestigious Fields Medal. She passed away much too soon, but her achievements live on and continue to inspire many. The Award has been established to honour her work as well as her role in breaking the glass ceiling for women in mathematics.

Professor Nalini Joshi AO (University of Sydney), winner of the 2026 Moyal Medal from Macquarie University, will deliver the 2026 Moyal Lecture on Wednesday 30 September titled: ‘Mathematics for Quantum-Era Security and Trust’. Her lecture will explore how mathematics underpins the technologies reshaping our world. AustMS WIMSIG Cheryl E Praeger Travel and Anne Penfold Street Awards

WIMSIG is calling for applications for the Cheryl E Praeger Travel and Anne Penfold Street Awards. The second round of 2025 closes on the 1^st October.

The Cheryl E Praeger Travel award are designed to provide full or partial support for Australian women, trans and gender diverse mathematicians based in Australia to attend conferences or to visit collaborators. The Awards are named after Prof Cheryl E. Praeger AC FAA, in recognition of her contributions to support and encourage women in mathematics.

Applications, using the application form and accompanied by a CV and other supporting documentation as detailed in the rules, should be sent to the Selection Committee via the email address praegertravelawards@austms.org.au.

The Anne Penfold Street award provides financial support to Australian mathematicians for their caring responsibilities, while they travel for conferences or research visits to collaborators. The Awards are named after Prof Anne Penfold Street AM, in recognition of her contributions to the advancement of knowledge across the broader mathematical community where she promoted the intellectual development of secondary and tertiary students and actively supported the advancement of her peers.

The potential uses of these Awards include, but are not limited to, short-term childcare or professional carers for elderly relatives. These Awards are open to: individuals studying/working/living in Australia, regardless of gender, or members of organising committees for mathematics/statistics conferences to be held in Australia.

We’re looking for an enthusiastic and collaborative academic with a strong background in statistics and/or mathematics to join our Mathematical Sciences team within the School of Science.

This is a great opportunity for early- to mid-career researchers or educators to contribute to high-quality teaching while developing or expanding their research portfolio. Whether you’re passionate about statistics education, statistical computing, data science, applied statistics, or mathematical modelling, you’ll be supported to make meaningful contributions that align with our research strengths.

Post-doc in geometric analysis – Macquarie University

Postdoctoral / Research Fellow – Australian National University

This position is funded by an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery project awarded to Ben Andrews, Mat Langford and James McCoy. The primary aim of the position is to carry out the research programs proposed for the Discovery project. This will be done in collaboration with the three chief investigators (named above) and a range of Australian and international collaborators.

The research will involve the analysis of certain sub-elliptic diffusion processes which are induced by geometric flows, with the aim of producing new and robust methods of establishing convergence results for many flow processes. As part of its mission to build a more inclusive mathematical sciences community, the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) celebrates two key initiatives: the Praeger-Henstridge Awards and Prizes, and the AMSI Yuille-Umbers Female Specialist Maths High School Scholarships.

Thanks to a generous gift from Professor Cheryl Praeger and Dr John Henstridge, the awards support greater participation of women and young people in mathematics and statistics. Delivered in collaboration with AustMS and the Statistical Society of Australia (SSA), these prizes honour excellence and promote diversity in the field.

The AMSI Yuille-Umbers Scholarships support outstanding Victorian female high school students studying specialist mathematics. By providing resources and mentoring, the program aims to boost female participation and confidence in mathematics.

These initiatives are key to bridging representation gaps, inspiring future leaders, and championing diverse role models in STEM.

WIMSIG Executive Committee Positions Open

At the end of 2025, WIMSIG will be electing new members for the Executive Committee, to commence terms in February 2026. The positions that will be open and the length of term are as follows.

Chair – (1-year incoming chair + 2-year chair + 1-year outgoing chair)
Secretary – 2-year term
Student Member – 1-year term

AustMS WIMSIG Cheryl E Praeger Travel and Anne Penfold Street Awards

WIMSIG is calling for applications for the Cheryl E Praeger Travel and Anne Penfold Street Awards. The second round of 2025 closes on the 1^st October.

The Cheryl E Praeger Travel award are designed to provide full or partial support for Australian women, trans and gender diverse mathematicians based in Australia to attend conferences or to visit collaborators. The Awards are named after Prof Cheryl E. Praeger AC FAA, in recognition of her contributions to support and encourage women in mathematics.

Applications, using the application form and accompanied by a CV and other supporting documentation as detailed in the rules, should be sent to the Selection Committee via the email address praegertravelawards@austms.org.au.

The Anne Penfold Street award provides financial support to Australian mathematicians for their caring responsibilities, while they travel for conferences or research visits to collaborators. The Awards are named after Prof Anne Penfold Street AM, in recognition of her contributions to the advancement of knowledge across the broader mathematical community where she promoted the intellectual development of secondary and tertiary students and actively supported the advancement of her peers.

The potential uses of these Awards include, but are not limited to, short-term childcare or professional carers for elderly relatives. These Awards are open to: individuals studying/working/living in Australia, regardless of gender, or members of organising committees for mathematics/statistics conferences to be held in Australia.

UniSA STEM is seeking a Lecturer level A/B to join the mathematics team at UniSA. Reporting to a Professorial Lead, the Lecturer: Data Science will be responsible for the development, delivery and coordination of courses within STEM’s undergraduate, Honours and postgraduate programs and for contributing to STEM’s research agenda. The position will contribute independently and as part of a team to support STEM’s teaching and research outcomes in the Mathematics and Data Science disciplines, and will carry out activities to maintain and develop scholarly research and/or professional activities.

In January UniSA and The University of Adelaide will join to become Adelaide University. The successful applicant will join the rest of the UniSA mathematics team in the new AU School of Mathematical Sciences, and teach into the exciting new mathematics programs.
