About the opportunity

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on the project ‘A coordinate-independent theory for multi-time-scale dynamical systems’ which has recently been funded by the Australian Research Council. The aim of this project is to develop a comprehensive theory for multi-scale problems (i.e., more than two scales) with non-uniform scale splitting within the framework of geometric singular perturbation theory, and, hence, provide a firm theoretical foundation for the observed dynamical hierarchy in biochemical reaction networks described by non-standard multi-scale problems. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Martin Wechselberger.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

• undertake research in multiple time-scale dynamical systems theory and its application
• publish research papers
• demonstrate research excellence.

The School of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Sydney is one of the largest in Australia. It has more than 89 academic staff to supervise research and teaching 74 postgraduate students and 925 equivalent full-time student-load undergraduate students.

• a demonstrated ability to complete work in timely fashion and to write up results for publication.

About the opportunity

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on a project entitled “A dynamical systems theory approach to machine learning”. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Georg Gottwald on developing, understanding and applying machine learning techniques using tools from dynamical systems theory. This project has recently been funded by the Australian Research Council.


Forecasting the future state of a high-dimensional complex multi-scale system is a challenge we face in areas ranging from climate science to epidemiology. Even when basic physical mechanisms have been identified, the actual evolution equations are often unknown. This project will develop a computationally cheap machine learning framework for forecasting. We will develop mathematical theory underpinning the novel methodology, as well as applying it to the perennial problem of subgrid-scale parametrisation in climate modelling.

We are one of the largest mathematical sciences schools in Australia. The University also hosts the Sydney Mathematical Research Institute (SMRI), which attracts leading mathematical scientists from all over the world to do research with Australian collaborators.

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Discrete Geometry, Combinatorial Topology, or a related field. The Australian Research Council has funded a research program into “Triangulations: linking geometry and topology with combinatorics”, through its Discovery Grant scheme, with the Chief Investigators Dr Jonathan Spreer (University of Sydney, Australia) and Professor Francisco Santos (Universidad de Cantabria, Santander, Spain).

Your key responsibilities will be to:

• undertake research in the areas of combinatorial topology, discrete geometry, and, in a broader sense, in geometric topology
• present research results at seminars and domestic and international conferences
• publish research papers
• support teaching activities and the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students..

An active interest in establishing close collaborations between the Australian and the European research communities in the field is highly desirable.

The Research Associate will be based at the University of Sydney, and visits to Universidad de Cantabria, Spain are planned to work with Professor Francisco Santos during the project.
