The School is affiliated with the newly established UNSW Data Science Hub which is a major strategic initiative of the Faculty of Science to cultivate and promote foundational and applied research in Data Science.

The Lecturer in Data Science will; (i) conduct research in this specialized field and align, where possible, with the existing research strengths in the School; (ii) contribute actively to the School’s teaching activities in Data Science and Statistics across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including online teaching; (iii) engage with the community and industry to build links in Data Science.

The Lecturer reports to the Head of School via the Head of Department.

Specific responsibilities for this role include

  • Actively carry out research in Data Science, Mathematics and Statistics with a view to publication in influential and high-impact scholarly journals.
  • Work both collaboratively and independently on research grant proposals and applications to national competitive grant agencies and other funding bodies.
  • Develop research collaborations within the School as well as links with other groups on campus and with industry.
  • Develop research collaborations nationally and internationally.
  • Actively disseminate research findings at seminars and conferences within the School, the UNSW environment, nationally and internationally.
  • Supervise Honours and Masters Course Work projects; and supervise PhD and Masters Research students.
  • Teach data science, mathematics, and statistics courses to a range of audiences at the University.
  • Teach specialist Honours and Masters level courses.
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of the School’s face-to-face teaching programs and courses.

Lecturer in Data Science and Statistics

The School of Mathematics and Statistics is seeking to expand its expertise in data science and contemporary statistics.

The successful applicant is expected to develop and maintain a high-level research program in data science and statistics. Beyond the Data Science and Statistics groups, the University of Melbourne provides an outstanding environment in which to develop innovative research in data science and statistics, with opportunities for collaborations in the Melbourne Centre for Data Science, with machine learning and bioinformatics researchers in Computing and Information Systems, biostatisticians in Population and Global Health, big data research in genomics in the Melbourne Integrative Genomics research hub as well as applied and theoretical approaches to big data in the Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for Mathematical and Statistical Frontiers (ACEMS). The School has excellent computing facilities and access to both local and cloud high performance computing clusters.

The candidate should also have a strong commitment to teaching and the supervision of research students. Teaching will occur within the School of Mathematics and Statistics undergraduate and MSc programs, and the applicant will be expected to teach statistics and its applications to a variety of audiences. They are also expected to supervise research students at undergraduate, MSc and PhD levels in data science and statistics.

Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Applied Mathematics (Women-Only Applicants)

The School seeks to recruit a staff member with a developed research program in applied mathematics broadly interpreted, including mathematical modelling, applied probability, mathematical data science and computational mathematics, or a closely related area of mathematics. The appointee will be required to engage in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and curriculum development, including service courses. In addition, the appointee will supervise Higher Degree by Research, postgraduate coursework and Honours students, conduct high-quality research and perform administrative, outreach and other activities associated with the School.

Departmental Lecturer

We are seeking up to two Departmental Lecturers to join the Department of Statistics, a world leader in research including computational statistics and statistical methodology, probability, bioinformatics and mathematical genetics. This is an exciting opportunity to engage in advanced study and primarily teach undergraduate and graduate students. These are temporary appointments until 30 September 2021 to make provision for teaching and allow the post-holders to conduct independent research. The Departmental Lecturers will have the skills and enthusiasm to contribute to teaching and assessment, and they will have the opportunity to carry out and publish original research.

As the successful Departmental Lecturer, you will have, or be close to completing, a PhD in probability, statistics or a related discipline and have an aptitude for teaching and some experience of teaching and research. You will have sufficient depth and breadth of knowledge in the subject to develop course materials and research proposals. You will also have a publication record and familiarity with the existing literature and research in the field commensurate with your career stage.
