News from the IMU Committee for Women in Mathematics

The Committee for Women in Mathematics CWM is happy to announce the forthcoming publication of the book:

World Women in Mathematics 2018 – Proceedings of the First World Meeting for Women in Mathematics (WM)²

The estimated publication date for the hardcover is December 21 this year, with the eBook to follow on January 18 next year.

The book was edited by CWM in coordination with the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM), and has just been published by Springer, as part of their AWM Series.

The first part of the volume starts with a short report with pictures on the activities of  the first World Meeting for Women in Mathematics — (WM)² — held in Rio de Janeiro on July 31st 2018, as a satellite event of ICM 2018. It includes a tribute to Maryam Mirzakhani. The report is followed by survey research papers from invited lecturers of the (WM)²: Monique Laurent, Alicia Dickenstein, Maria Eulália Vares and Maria J. Esteban. These articles provide panoramic views of different fields in pure and applied mathematics.

The second part of the volume documents the CWM panel discussion at ICM 2018, entitled “The gender gap in mathematical and natural sciences from a historical perspective”, with articles from the panelists.

Congratulations to Nalini Joshi

Prof Nalini Joshi (USyd) has been named as a Bragg Member of the Royal Institute of Australia (RiAus) in recognition of her outstanding contributions to science in Australia.

AMSI launches Women in STEM pledge

Several tech companies have signed AMSI’s Women in STEM pledge to open opportunities for Women in STEM. This is an important project as the Choose Maths 2019 Gender report shows that women continue to be underrepresented in mathematical disciplines at all levels of education and professional career.

EVENTS

WIMSIG Business Meeting and Dinner

The WIMSIG Women in Mathematical Sciences Dinner will be held on Monday 2 December as part of the 63rd Annual Meeting of the Australian Mathematical Society at Monash University.

The event is free to all participants of the AustMS meeting, regardless of gender or membership of WIMSIG. The purpose of the dinner is to support women, and particularly early career researchers, to enter and establish careers in mathematics. Come along to hear about the careers of the AustMS 2019 female plenary speakers, to discuss issues concerning women in mathematics in Australia, and to network with fellow WIMSIG members and supporters.

The annual WIMSIG Business Meeting will also be held on Monday 2 December, just prior to the Women in Mathematical Sciences Dinner. As with the Dinner, anyone interested in WIMSIG activities is welcome to attend.
