Annual WIMSIG Business Meeting and Dinner
The annual WIMSIG Dinner will be held on Monday 4 December as part of the 67th Annual Meeting of the Australian Mathematical Society at The University of Queensland. The WIMSIG Dinner is open to all participants of the AustMS meeting, regardless of gender or membership of WIMSIG. The purpose of the dinner is to support women, trans and gender diverse people, and particularly early career researchers, to enter and establish careers in mathematics. Come along to hear about the careers of the AustMS 2023 women plenary speakers, to discuss issues concerning women, trans and gender diverse people in mathematics in Australia, and to network with fellow WIMSIG members and supporters.
The annual WIMSIG Business Meeting will also be held on Monday 4 December, prior to the WIMSIG Dinner, at 4pm. As with the Dinner, anyone interested in WIMSIG activities is welcome to attend the Business Meeting.
WIMSIG Executive Committee Call for Nominations
At the end of 2023, WIMSIG will be electing new members for the Executive Committee, to commence terms in February 2024. The positions that will be open and the length of term are as follows.
- WIMSIG Incoming Chair — 4-year term
- WIMSIG Secretary — 2-year term
- Student Member — 1-year term
If you are interested in the opportunity to lead the drive for gender equity in Australian Mathematics, please consider nominating for a position by November 30. If you have any questions about these roles, please contact the WIMSIG Chair, Jennifer Flegg (wimsig-chair@austms.org.au).
The Returning Officer is Julie Clutterbuck (julie.clutterbuck@monash.edu).
Usually a nominee acts as nominator (self-nomination) and needs another nominator to support their nomination. Both nominee and nominator should be WIMSIG members. The nominee should email the Returning Officer with the following information: the nominee’s name, the name and email address of the nominator, the role, and a statement from the nominee on why they would like to take on that role. This statement will be sent out to the WIMSIG membership list should there be an election. The nominator will be contacted by the Returning Officer directly.
WIMSIG2024 Conference — Call for Special Sessions EOI
WIMSIG is excited to announce the upcoming WIMSIG Conference 2024, which will be held on 1–2 October 2024 at the Sydney Mathematical Research Institute (SMRI).
We are now inviting Expressions of Interest (EOI) for organising Special Sessions at WIMSIG 2024, each focused on a specific area of the mathematical sciences.
Key responsibilities for Special Session organisers:
- Session Theme: Define a single topic of interest in the domains of the mathematical sciences.
- Select Speakers: Identify and invite 8–11 women, trans and gender diverse speakers who can offer valuable insights and knowledge within the session’s chosen theme. We encourage the inclusion of research students among the speakers to provide emerging scholars with a valuable opportunity to showcase their work.
- Speaker Coordination: Liaise with confirmed speakers, ensuring that they provide you with their presentation title and an abstract by a date to be specified.
If your group is smaller than the recommended number of speakers, you also have the option to merge with a related session.
Prospective Special Session organisers are asked to submit a proposal consisting of a title, a description (not to exceed 100 words), the name of at least one co-organiser, and a list of potential speakers using the online submission form. We strongly recommend that every special session has at least two organisers.
EOI Submission Deadline: 16 February 2024
For enquiries, please contact Catherine Greenhill.
