Position: Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow in Economic Modelling

This is a full-time position with the classification depending on experience at either a Research Fellow Academic B ($101,598–$120,647) or Senior Research Fellow Academic C ($124,457–$143,506) plus 17% superannuation. Working 36.75 hours (1.0 FTE) per week over a fixed term contract period (to 31 December 2024) there is the expectation of ongoing renewal of the contract subject to performance and budget.

About us
The Centre of Policy Studies (CoPS) is a Research Centre within Victoria University (VU) Research. We have been at the forefront of economic research and policy analysis for almost half a century and are renowned for development, application and training in computable general equilibrium (CGE) modelling. CoPS’ staff are the creators of many high profile CGE models, and the economic modelling software package, GEMPACK, used in over ninety-five countries.
About the role
We are looking for an exceptional Ph.D qualified economist, mathematician or computer scientist to contribute to our research program and make a significant mark in the field of economy-wide modelling. You will be an integral part of a research team that undertakes contract research studies on diverse policy topics for private and public sector agencies all around the world. Recent CoPS studies have covered a wide range of policy topics in such areas as: tax, trade, macro policy, climate change, water policy, banking and finance, migration, major projects, microeconomic reform, transport, and labour markets. Working together with the Director of CoPS and other senior CoPS staff, the researcher will be required to undertake research in the development, application and/or computation of large-scale economy-wide models.
About the person
The position will appeal to a researcher who has a strong background in applied economics or a relevant quantitative background in applied mathematics or computer science, and who values the importance of detailed quantitative analysis in informing evidence-based decision making in economics. The position represents an excellent opportunity for a person with the necessary modelling skills to join and play a leading research role in this highly regarded research centre. The ideal candidate should have the ability to identify and develop potential collaborations with industry partners, governmental bodies, and other relevant stakeholders. This requires skills in understanding rigorous academic principles and real-world applications, and bridging the gap between the two. The position requires a strong desire to work collaboratively in a team environment, together with a demonstrated record of research output in the form of publications, conference papers, reports, external engagements, and/or professional and/or technical contributions in the area of policy applications of large-scale economic models.
Duties
An example of duties you may perform will include:
- Undertake economic research for a range of national and international public agencies.
- Develop a range of regional, national and global economic models, and apply these models to diverse areas of current public policy interest.
- Train others in the development and application of large-scale economic models.
- Translate your work into public reports, academic publications, media engagement, and other outreach activities.
