Research Fellow in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics @Monash

Research Fellow in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics @Monash

Job No.: 647132

Location: Clayton campus, Monash University
Employment Type: Full-time
Duration: 2-year fixed-term appointment
Remuneration: $75,115–$101,944 p.a. Level A (plus 17% employer superannuation)
Closing Date: Tuesday 7 March 2023, 11:55 pm AEDT

An exciting opportunity is available for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join an Australian Research Council (ARC) grant-funded team modelling intrusions into density-stratified fluids. The ultimate aims of the project are (1) to understand the interaction and feedback between the dynamics of the intrusion and internal waves generated in the ambient fluid and (2) develop a reduced-order model for predicting the dynamics of these flows in a variety of applications such as the early evolution of volcanic ash clouds and important meso-scale oceanic flows such as the Mediterranean overflow.

The research will be in collaboration with Dr Anja Slim (School of Mathematics and School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment, Monash), Prof Stefan Llewellyn Smith (Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and Engineering, UCSD) and Prof Murray Rudman (Faculty of Engineering, Monash). The position will be based at Monash with research visits to the US.

Monash University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer with a strong institutional commitment to excellence and diversity, and the Research Fellow will be well integrated into a highly supportive and dynamic research environment that has a strong history of research excellence and collaboration with researchers locally and internationally.

About you

As the successful candidate, you will have:
• A recent PhD in a relevant field of study, including applied mathematics, oceanic and atmospheric sciences, physics or engineering. A doctoral degree is required at the time of appointment
• A strong background in fluid dynamics and/or partial differential equations, with experience in asymptotic methods and/or integro-differential equations. Experience with stratified flows is desirable although not essential.

Diversity is one of our greatest strengths at Monash. We encourage applications from First Nations people, culturally and linguistically diverse people, people with disabilities, neurodiverse people, and people of all genders, sexualities, and age groups.

Monash avidly supports flexible and hybrid working arrangements. We have a range of policies in place enabling staff to combine work and personal commitments more easily.
