Your new team

The Curtin Centre for Optimisation and Decision Science works with industry and government to develop new optimisation technology for solving complex modelling and decision problems. The Centre was established in January 2022 and currently includes 19 full-time staff whose expertise spans operations research, process control, computational modelling, and data science. The Centre has major projects with various organisations in the mining, energy, and defence sectors. Current research areas include maintenance planning and scheduling, optimising chemical processes, and drill and blast optimisation in mining. A new area of focus is developing quantum algorithms to solve difficult optimisation problems.

About the role

An exciting opportunity exists for a postdoctoral researcher to join our Centre on a three-year appointment, with the possibility of extension.

The primary purpose of this role is to work with the Centre director, other Centre staff, and industry partners to develop and drive a collaborative inter-disciplinary research program in quantum optimisation.

Your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Conducting high-quality fundamental research in quantum computing
  • Taking the lead in publishing your work in top international journals
  • Contributing to other activities such as preparing proposals for research funding and professional consultancy, supervising honours and PhD students, and teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate level where required.

What we are looking for 

Essential Criteria
  1. A doctoral qualification in mathematical sciences, computer science, or physics.
  2. A track record of publications in high-quality international journals in optimisation, quantum computing, and/or computational mathematics.
  3. A strong theoretical background in relevant areas such as quantum computing, complexity theory, nonlinear optimisation, algorithm design and analysis, and numerical methods.
  4. Excellent computing skills and experience working with relevant programming languages and platforms.
  5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  6. Interest in applied research, consulting, and research commercialisation.

Role requirements

  1. As this is a fixed-term contract, you will require current work rights in Australia that match the tenure of this role. We will also consider candidates who are eligible for a relevant work visa. Relocation support may be considered.
  2. Successful applicants are subject to a National Police Clearance, qualification verification and background, integrity, and reference checks to Curtin’s satisfaction.
