The University of Newcastle is seeking a PhD candidate to undertake doctoral study quantifying uncertainty in climate modelling applied at high resolution. The candidate will be supported through an industry scholarship (APA equivalent) provided by Climate Risk, an industry partner. Climate Risk’s modelling team is based in Newcastle, Australia, and the PhD candidate will also be based in Newcastle.
Climate Risk is a focussed team and we are seeking candidates with a strong values alignment, i.e., a shared interest in understanding and mitigating climate risk. Information about Climate Risk is available here: https://www.climaterisk.com.au/.
The research is grounded in a more-than-disciplinary context, i.e., seeking to understand and communicate climate risk for the purpose of mitigating risks to human populations. Appointment of Social Media and News Coordinator

The Society is pleased to announce the appointment of David Roberts as its new Social Media and News Coordinator.
David will be curating news stories for our website and managing our social media presence.
The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee promotes the objectives of the Society in relation to equity, diversity and inclusion practices through relevant activities, and provides strategic advice to Council on matters relevant to diversity practices.
David is a pure mathematician working at the intersection of category theory and geometry (and other topics). He is currently a postdoc in the Institute for Geometry and its Applications at the University of Adelaide, and cut his social media teeth on Google+ before moving to Twitter and now running his own blog, ‘TheHigherGeometer’.
The AustMS FaceBook page has grown in popularity in recent years under the stewardship of Sid Morris and the Society thanks him for this valuable service and many posts, both serious and entertaining.

The Mathematics Education special session of the Australian Mathematical Society Annual Meeting, hosted by the University of New England, 8-10 December 2020, is now accepting submissions.

Talks in this session may focus on pedagogy, professional development or other topics relevant to tertiary mathematics education.

The School seeks to recruit a staff member with a developed research program in applied mathematics broadly interpreted, including mathematical modelling, applied probability, mathematical data science and computational mathematics, or a closely related area of mathematics. The appointee will be required to engage in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and curriculum development, including service courses. In addition, the appointee will supervise Higher Degree by Research, postgraduate coursework and Honours students, conduct high-quality research and perform administrative, outreach and other activities associated with the School.
Applicants should have a PhD or equivalent in applied mathematics or a closely related discipline, with an established record of outstanding original research commensurate with career stage. The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (Level A,6+) to conduct research in a collaborative research team based at the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Sydney. This role will report to Professor Nalini Joshi and Associate Professor Milena Radnovic, carrying out mathematical research and preparing and presenting results in papers and conferences, co-supervising undergraduate and graduate research students and being involved in outreach and mentoring activities.
This position is part of the research project funded by Professor Nalini Joshi’s and Dr Milena Radnovic’s ARC Discovery Project Geometric analysis of nonlinear systems. You will be expected to work in a general area of research concerning dynamical systems, integrable systems and related areas, including algebraic and analytic approaches to these areas. A focus on discrete and classical Painlevé equations is expected, but connections with other fields, including billiards and moduli spaces, will be encouraged. Additionally, you will be expected to support the activities of the research team and apply for independent research fellowship or funding.
The position is full-time, fixed-term for up to two years, with the possibility of renewal for a further 6 months. We encourage candidates with caring or family responsibilities to apply and, in such circumstances, appointment may be available on a part-time basis.

We are seeking up to two Departmental Lecturers to join the Department of Statistics, a world leader in research including computational statistics and statistical methodology, probability, bioinformatics and mathematical genetics. This is an exciting opportunity to engage in advanced study and primarily teach undergraduate and graduate students. These are temporary appointments until 30 September 2021 to make provision for teaching and allow the post-holders to conduct independent research. The Departmental Lecturers will have the skills and enthusiasm to contribute to teaching and assessment, and they will have the opportunity to carry out and publish original research.
As the successful Departmental Lecturer, you will have, or be close to completing, a PhD in probability, statistics or a related discipline and have an aptitude for teaching and some experience of teaching and research. You will have sufficient depth and breadth of knowledge in the subject to develop course materials and research proposals. You will also have a publication record and familiarity with the existing literature and research in the field commensurate with your career stage.
