Australian Mathematical Society’s  Teaching Excellence Awards

Members are encouraged to nominate for the Australian Mathematical Society’s  Teaching Excellence Awards.

The AustMS annual Award for Teaching Excellence and the annual Award for Teaching Excellence (Early Career) have been established to encourage excellence in mathematics teaching in higher education.

The AustMS Award for Teaching Excellence and Award for Teaching Excellence (Early Career) aim to recognise and reward outstanding contribution to teaching and student learning in the mathematical sciences at the tertiary level.

With these awards the AustMS recognises the importance of quality of mathematics teaching and the impact it has on the training of a future mathematics workforce. Progressive teaching is essential to maintaining high standards across service courses for other disciplines, where  high-quality mathematics teaching is of key importance.

Each year a Teaching Excellence Award and a Teaching Excellence Award (Early Career) will be presented at the Annual Meeting, with the prize money for each award set at $1000 per annum. Awardees will be invited to give a presentation on their work at the Annual Meeting and write a short classroom note for the Gazette.

CARMA-MATRIX Maths Art/Poster Competition

CARMA is partnering with MATRIX for the Annual CARMA-MATRIX Maths/Art Poster Competition.  As previously, entries are invited in the categories: Art, Outreach and Research.  Entry is available at https://carmamaths.org/art/gallery/competition/ and entries close 30th October.  Winners will be announced at AustMS2022, in the “Visualisation and Mathematical Art” Special Session. This year for the first time there will also be a physical exhibition of selected invited works at MATRIX House.

Title: Comparative Judgement and Learning through Engagement with Someone Else’s Reasoning

Abstract: Involving students in mathematical discourse can help them build a deeper conceptual understanding of the mathematics they are learning. One approach is to have students engage with written mathematical arguments and solutions to problems from their peers. Novices do not have the same capacity as experts to judge the work they are reading, but novices do have the capacity to compare two pieces of work and judge which one is better.  Comparative judgement can be used as a pedagogical tool to help students learn mathematics. In this talk, I will describe some ways comparative judgement has been implemented in mathematics courses and how we are working to better understand the effects comparative judgement exercises may have on learning mathematics.

Indigenizing University Mathematics 2: Indigenous Perspectives on Maths and Applications

“Indigenizing University Mathematics 2: Indigenous Perspectives on Maths and Applications” will run online this year with some face-to-face components, hosted by First Nations University 26-29 Sept 2022 Canadian dates.  This will be 27-30 Sept in Australia, mostly in the mornings, with some possible face to face components in Newcastle.  The workshop will build upon IUM1. Funding for EMCR activities through the Theo Murphy Initiative

Applications for funding by the Theo Murphy Initiative (Australia) to deliver activities that support early- and mid-career researchers (EMCRs) are now OPEN! EMCRs are invited to submit proposals to receive funding for activities to be delivered in the period early September 2022 – August 2023.
In its 2022–2023 round, the Theo Murphy Initiative (Australia) will fund interdisciplinary activities that provide research and career development opportunities for EMCRs in Australia. There are three streams of funding available: Flagship activities, Amplify activities and Participation support.

The Sydney Mathematical Research Institute (SMRI) International Visitor Program: applications open

The IVP2022 Round 2 applications are now open. Researchers in the mathematical sciences from international and Australian universities who wish to do research at SMRI either individually or as part of a group of collaborators are warmly invited to apply.

This round is for visits taking place between July 2023–June 2024 for general applicants, and March 2023–June 2024 for Australian citizens/permanent residents and New Zealand citizens.

Mahler Lecture Series: Prof. Frank Calegari

The biennial Mahler Lecture Series is restarting this year with an exciting program of lectures delivered by Prof. Frank Calegari (University of Chicago). The Speaker’s research area is algebraic number theory, and he is particularly interested in the Langlands programme, especially the notion of reciprocity linking Galois representations and motives to automorphic forms.
