The successful candidate will conduct theoretical analysis and perform efficient implementation for novel discretisation techniques applied to the numerical solution of partial differential equations, under the guidance of Associate Professor Ricardo Ruiz Baier. In particular, the intended project is related to the simulation of the coupling between diffusion of intracellular calcium and elasticity in different types of cells (embryonic epithelial, cardiomyocytes, and other single cells or cell compounds), using virtual element methods or other schemes based on polytopal meshes.

Applicants must have a PhD in Applied Mathematics, Numerical Analysis, Scientific Computing, or a related field. It is also expected that they have a sound knowledge and experience in the analysis and implementation of virtual element schemes and/or mixed finite element methods, as well as some knowledge about solid mechanics.

The School of Mathematics at Monash University invites applicants for the position of Research Fellow to work on a project in Scientific Computing and Numerical Analysis for partial differential equations (PDEs).

The successful candidate will work on novel numerical approximations of PDEs under the guidance of Professor Santiago Badia. Current research lines include: neural network-based nonlinear discretisation of PDEs and their combination with other advanced (unfitted and hybridised) techniques; machine learning for PDE-constrained inverse problems, data assimilation, and nonlinear preconditioning. Current applications of this research include sea water intrusion, heart modelling and bushfire propagation. This research is supported by the Australian Research Council through two recent Discovery Projects and a Monash Data Futures Institute Project.

Applicants must have a PhD in Mathematics, Physics or Engineering, with a strong background in numerical methods for PDEs using finite element methods and/or related techniques. Background in the mathematical foundations of machine learning will be highly appreciated.

WIMSIG is calling for applications for the Maryam Mirzakhani Award (closing date 1st of April)

Maryam Mirzakhani (1977–2017) was an Iranian mathematician and a professor at Stanford University. In 2014 she became the first female recipient of the prestigious Fields Medal. She passed away much too soon but her achievements live on and continue to inspire many.

The Maryam Mirzakhani Award has been established to honour her work as well as her role in breaking the glass ceiling for women in mathematics.     

The Maryam Mirzakhani Award is designed to support international female students pursuing a postgraduate degree in mathematics in Australia. Each year the award will be made on a competitive basis by a selection committee of distinguished mathematicians, appointed by the executive committee of WIMSIG.

There is one round of the Maryam Mirzakhani Award per year, with the closing date each year being the 1st of April. The potential uses of these Awards include, but are not limited to, short-term childcare or professional carers for elderly relatives. These Awards are open to: individuals studying/working/living in Australia, regardless of gender, or members of organising committees for mathematics/statistics conferences to be held in Australia.

Postdoc in Algorithmic Phylogenetics@University of Auckland

A postdoctoral position is available to work on a project related to algorithmic foundations of phylogenetic networks. Such networks are used to represent and analyse evolutionary relationships between entities such as species, viruses, and cancer cells. A particular focus of the project is the development of new parameterized algorithms and other algorithms with performance guarantee to reconstruct phylogenetic networks from biological data. The position is for 18 months, to commence in early 2023, and fully-funded by a Marsden Fund Grant from the Royal Society of New Zealand Te Apārangi. The successful candidate will be based in the School of Computer Science at the University of Auckland.
