The School of Mathematics and Statistics currently has more than sixty continuing academic staff and more than thirty research staff as well as visiting academics. The School embodies a broad range of research interests in the areas of applied and pure mathematics and statistics. In Pure Mathematics, the School has particular research strengths in Algebra, Analysis, Combinatorics, Geometry, Mathematical Physics and Number Theory. More broadly, the School also has research strengths in Bayesian and Monte Carlo Methods, Mathematical Modelling and Biomathematics, Biostatistics and Ecology, Computational Mathematics, Data Science, Dynamical Systems and Integrability, Data Science, Finance and Risk Analysis, Nonparametric Statistics, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Optimisation, Stochastic Analysis, Stochastic Modelling and Fractional Calculus. The School is also expanding its teaching and research programs in Data Science. The School’s research groups are interconnected, with frequent interactions between groups and with other schools and faculties both within and outside UNSW.

The Lecturer conducts research in areas that align with the research strengths in the School; and contributes actively to the School’s teaching activities across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

  • Level B – $109K – $128K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 5 years CTT (Convertible Tenure Track)
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The Lecturer reports to the Head of School via the Head of the Pure Department.

Specific responsibilities for this role include

  • Actively carry out research in the areas that align with the research strengths in the School with a view to publication in influential and high-impact scholarly journals.
  • Work both collaboratively and independently on research grant proposals and applications to national competitive grant agencies and other funding bodies.
  • Develop research collaborations within the School as well as links with other groups on campus and with industry.
  • Develop research collaborations nationally and internationally.
  • Actively disseminate research findings at seminars and conferences within the School, the UNSW environment, nationally and internationally.
  • Supervise Honours and Masters Course Work projects; and supervise PhD and Masters Research students.
  • Teach mathematics courses to a range of audiences at the University.
  • Teach specialist Honours and Masters level courses.
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of the School’s teaching programs and courses.
  • Actively participate in School activities and demonstrate an ability and willingness take on leadership roles in the School.
  • Undertake administrative duties as specified by the Head of School and participate in School,
  • Faculty and/or University committees as required.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.

About the successful applicant

  • PhD or equivalent qualification in relevant mathematics sciences.
  • Demonstrated research ability in an area of Pure Mathematics, which aligns with the research directions in the School. Mathematicians working in algebra or geometry are particularly encouraged to apply.
  • Evidence of effective teaching experience.
  • Evidence of research group collaborations.
  • Capacity to conduct productive research at an international level.
  • Strong publication record in top, peer-reviewed journals.
  • A record, or demonstrated ability, of success in external research funding.
  • Ability to supervise PhD students.

PhD position, The University of Melbourne

The University of Melbourne

A PhD position is available to work with Dr Jesper Ipsen and other members of the Mathematical Physics Group on the ARC DECRA project “Stability and Complexity: New insights from Random Matrix Theory”. The project is in the fields of Random Matrix Theory and Random Fields with a focus on investigating criteria of stability in large complex systems. The research of this project is mainly fundamental in nature, but the successful candidate will also also have the opportunity to investigate potential applications across a wide range of enterprises, including the physical and biological sciences.

Candidates with a strong interest and demonstrated skills in at least one of the following areas are encouraged to apply: Mathematical Physics, Probability Theory, Complex Systems.

Essential Skills/Qualifications 

  • First class Honours, MSc or equivalent 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
  • Demonstrated organisational skills, time management and ability to work to deadlines
  • Demonstrated problem solving abilities and analytical skills
  • The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as a member of a team
